Myth of Midas Ok,

Myth of Midas

Ok, you guessed it! Being the mother of a 4th grader in California means the family does a report on the Gold Rush. Given the propensity of Indian women's weakness to this yellow metal, I fell right in with the idea of panning for placer gold along with my 9 year old. Fortunately, it was a warm summerishly spring day and the American river was "as cold as the Ganga" (the 9 yr old) and we just about managed to balance ourselves on rocks to collect some river gravel to find some forgotten nuggets mixed in the sand. After an hour of "panning" we hit a few sparkling atoms that dissapeared right through our fingers and finally the 9 yr old found a tiny piece of Sierra Nevadan Quartz that had slivers of gold embedded in it. We concluded that the trip was a grand success and now we are ready to sit down to WRITE the report! The 4 year old is now busy "writing" a report in math: He is making a 2 look like a z and a 12 into a soccer ball...
